CAFÉ NEXUS, GOLD COAST

Café at Griffith University

The Vision

My vision for Nexus Café is to create a dynamic meeting place where design, function, and universal accessibility come together to strengthen connections between people. Inspired by the idea of connection points, I use colors and materials that symbolize both the urban and the natural, inviting social interaction and reflection. Through thoughtful spatial planning, with a focus on sustainable solutions, functional aesthetics, and accessibility for all, my goal is to offer customers a sense of calm and belonging. Nexus Café is designed to be a place where meaningful encounters happen, with every detail crafted to support an inclusive experience for everyone, regardless of background or needs

The name Nexus signifies connection points and is inspired by the concept of everyday junctions – places where different elements meet, interact, and connect. The color palette was specifically chosen to reflect these connection points: black represents social interaction, grey symbolizes the urban environment, terracotta evokes the human heart, and green embodies nature's connection point.

Branding

Here you can see how the branding comes to life within the café. The café features coffee bags and reusable thermo cups, which customers can purchase. The design is minimalist and modern, reflecting Nexus' brand identity. You’ll notice a strong connection between the products and the overall design, for example, the metallic silver on the coffee bags is echoed in the lighting fixtures.

Floor Plan

The space planning has been carefully considered, with a focus on the functional use of space. The zoning is clearly defined, with benches featuring integrated tables to optimize seating both indoors and outdoors. The layout ensures a natural flow, making it easy for customers to navigate while also supporting efficient operations. The outdoor area extends the interior space, and I have used the same flooring both inside and outside to reinforce this visual connection. Creating an open environment between the two areas offers additional seating options, especially on sunny days. The placement of the furniture is designed to foster intimacy and interaction without the space feeling overcrowded.

Material Board

When it comes to materials, my main focus has been on selecting timeless, durable finishes that align with the café’s sustainable vision. These choices also reflect the core values of the Nexus brand. The materials are not only functional but also tell a story of sustainability and longevity. The selections I’ve made ensure that Nexus Café will not only maintain its aesthetic appeal but also endure the wear and tear of everyday use over time. The contrast created through the combination of various elements—color, form, and texture—becomes a visual connection point, which is at the heart of what Nexus represents.
